Your Permit Was Approved — What Happens Next?

Once a building permit is issued, the work must be built according to the approved plans and the Ontario Building Code. MANDATORY INSPECTIONS Toronto Building inspects work at critical stages of construction — for example footings and foundations, framing, plumbing, insulation and fire separations, and the final inspection. The required inspections depend on the project and are listed with your permit. YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES • The builder or owner must request each required inspection — the City does not schedule them automatically. • Do not cover work (for example with drywall or backfill) before its required inspection is completed. • Keep the permit and approved drawings available on site during construction. • Correct any deficiencies an inspector identifies and request a re-inspection if needed. • Book the final inspection when the work is complete so the permit can be closed. WHY IT MATTERS An open permit, or work covered before inspection, can delay a sale or refinancing and may require work to be opened up later.
